Mangochi Forest Reserve

Malawi

Mangochi Forest Reserve in Malawi has been dedicated to the QCC.

Mangochi Forest Reserve, spanning 37,600 hectares, physically adjoins and is ecologically linked to the Liwonde National Park, also dedicated to the QCC.

The forest is a rugged, mountainous area covered in woodlands and forests which was set aside by the Government of Malawi in the 1920s for the purpose of protecting the forest resources and its important role as a water catchment.

African Parks have managed Mangochi Forest since 2018 and already significant progress is being made in aggressing the illegal activities taking place in the area, greatly reducing tree loss.

There are many Village Natural Resource Management Committees who are engaged with and involved in management of the parks, and a number of community initiatives taking place, from education support to livelihood programmes, and human/wildlife conflict mitigation.
