Aranuka Mangrove Preservation Project

The island of Aranuka is known for its old stand of Rhyzophora stylosa mangroves that have grown as tall as coconut trees and forms an outstanding high mountain feature and dense mangrove on the island.
The area is now a breeding and nesting sites for birds, reef fish and crabs. This mangrove forest is a culturally sacred place for the people of Aranuka and as such is not used by the local community as a source of building materials, dye and medicine, which would typically be the case for mangroves forests in Kiribati.
