Introduction to the CFA Zambia Branch

The Commonwealth Forestry Association-Zambian Branch has been operating in a dynamic environment characterised by major shifts in environmental debates and paradigms, a global recession and new challenges facing non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

The CFA Zambia activities have been characterised by efforts to strengthen and streamline the branch into a more focussed and effective body responsive to the needs of the Zambian society.

As is the case with the many other NGOs, the CFA Zambian Branch is faced with the challenge of responding pro-actively to the environment and development debates that have arisen at both local and international scenarios.

Much of the CFA Zambian Branch activities have been focussed on important issues of desertification, climate change, participatory approaches and community mobilisation including the opening up of negotiations on forestry, agriculture and rural development.

The CFA Zambian Branch looks forward to partnerships, assistance and collaboration with different institutions in the promotion of its ideals and aspirations.

We are committed to domesticating the aims and objectives of the World wide CFA at local levels tailored to the needs of local requirements and carrying capacity. We also hope to contribute to the development of different initiatives being instituted at local, national, regional, Pan-African and Global levels. The programmes are based on local themes that focus on the following key issues:

  • Domesticate the policies, aims and objectives of CFA at local levels
  • Contribute towards the development of national capacity to undertake research and related training in forestry, agriculture and rural development
  • Contribute to the effective formulation of policy and advocacy based on experiences derived from research and networking activities
  • Provide technical and organisational support to the government and their line departments, private sectors, NGOs and disadvantaged groups
  • Develop innovative mechanisms for collation and dissemination of information and skills to target groups
  • Develop research and training methodologies directly linked to CFA’s aims and objectives
