MoU with the Lusaka National Museum

The Commonwealth Forestry Association-Zambian Branch and the Lusaka National Museum have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop cooperative programmes in order to increase awareness of Zambia's forest resources, particularly amongst the young.

Under this agreement the Museum and CFA Zambia agree to co-operate in the achievement of the following objectives:

·          To make an assessment of the demand and options for a young people’s driven environmental awareness system in Zambia;

·          Promote children’s awareness of the importance of nature and cultural objects as they can contribute to their scientific, mathematical and technological learning;

·          Promote imagination and innovation in children as well as adults by use of nature and cultural objects as a basis for better understanding of the science of forestry and its habitats;

·          Inculcate the appreciation of science in children by making its application in nature and cultural objects an entertaining experience;

·          To develop a school children’s partially referenced environmental awareness system which relates to the given age group and geographical position of each of the nine provinces in Zambia;

·          To create increased awareness of the importance of conserving “forests and their habitat” resources to young people who are the future administrators and users of the same resource;

·          To identify both traditional, scientific and ‘peer group’ driven methods used in biodiversity conservation and awareness;

·          To assess whether local government, school going children and their peers including local communities and traditional establishments take account of all forest values including environmental services and biological diversity, not just timber production, fuel wood, charcoal and other products;

·          Identify sectors and groups that benefit from forests, define the benefits and establish objectives for sustaining and balancing them and also to find out how objectives are achieved;

·          Develop a framework to analyse nature and cultural objects to determine their scientific, mathematical and technological principles;

·          Design an interactive exhibition of selected objects that carry on board both children and adults as active learners of science, mathematics and technology;

·          Mount a long-term interactive science based exhibition at the Lusaka National Museum;

·          Develop a learning process for school children and teachers.
