The Malawi Ornithological Society was founded in 1996 as a non-profit organization. The purpose of the Society is to promote the discovery and dissemination of knowledge of birds; to encourage specifically the observation, study and conservation of birds in Malawi; to encourage ornithology and conservation in local wildlife clubs; and to stimulate cooperation among professional ornithologists. The key people at foundation were Lawrence Luhanga and Dr. Martin Nhlane, the Malawi's first Ornithologist.
Since 1998, MOS has coordinated research projects conducted in collaboration with its major Partner, the Museum of Malawi's Department of Ornithology. MOS has also helped the training of scientists at home and abroad in areas
