Chapter 2: Sustainable
forest management
Jim Ball Chair Commonwealth Forestry Association
This chapter covers all aspects of sustainable forest management1, including not only
management techniques but also the conservation of forest resources and their protection.
1 ITTO has defined sustainable forest management as: The process of managing
permanent
forest land to achieve one or more clearly specified objectives of management with regard to
the continuous flow of desired forest products and services without undue reduction in its
inherent values and future productivity and without undue undesirable effects on the physical
and social environment.
