BOX 1.3 Urban tree planting in Malaysia
Urban tree planting has gone through three phases in Malaysia, a process similar to many
other countries:
-
Pre-independence. Pterocarpus indicus is reported to have been planted in Malacca
(1778) and Penang (1802); Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens (1888) and Penang Botanical
Gardens established; widespread urban tree planting in the 1920s and 1930s.
-
Greening programmes, starting with Kuala Lumpur (1973); Landscape Unit established in
Dept. of Town & Country Planning (1981); rules and regulations for the planting, cutting
and conservation of trees; greater emphasis on urban tree planting in the Structural Plan
for Kuala Lumpur
-
Landscaping the Nation programme (1995), and a Prime-ministerial nation-wide “Garden
Nation” campaign (1997), both supported by growing public interest in the environment
and demand for attractive surroundings; local government nurseries established to meet
the demand for plants; Landscape Master Plans for every town or city council.
