NATIONAL FOREST SERVICE
National forest management is the responsibility of the Forest and Conservation Division of the
Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. Its responsibilities include policy and planning, forestry
research, plantation forestry, agroforestry and conservation. A separate committee exists within
the MAF to coordinate all agroforestry activities. The Ministry of Land, Survey and Natural
Resources administers the Environment Act, and an Environmental Unit within the Ministry is
responsible for environment and conservation matters. Under the provisions of the 1976 Parks
and Reserves Act, a Parks and Reserves Authority was established in 1989 within the Ministry
of Lands, Survey and Natural Resources to protect, manage and develop natural areas in
Tonga.
